Hello, I’ve decided to build an RC lawnmower. I picked up two wheelchair motors and was originally going to use these and make it 2wd but with the steep slopes I’m cutting I think this may be a waste of time. I thought about these two motors running 4wd with chain but I don’t know. I’m now thinking I may go with 4 IG42 motors and 6″ wheels….. Will this be strong enough or should I go IG52 motors and 10″ heavy tread tiller tires? Will power a gas lawnmower. Thanks for the help.

With our experience, the IG42 motors probably do not have enough power unless it is a very lightweight mower. That’s why we use IG52 motors in our 4WD chassis. It takes a lot of torque to skid steer the wheels with that much weight in grass. The 2WD design is a lot easier because it doesn’t have to skid steer.

You can use the wheelchair motors and chain couple them like we do in our 4WD WC DB robot (http://www.superdroidrobots.com/shop/item.aspx/4wd-all-terrain-robot-platform-wc-db/2093/) but you’ll need to build a frame to mount the motors on and to mount two bearings per wheel. You’ll need wheels that mount to shafts that will spin in the the bearings. Then you’ll need to chain couple the motors to one of the shafts and couple the shafts together so that the motor drives both wheels. We have all the shafts, chain, sprockets if you elect to go this route.

Thanks for the reply, I have decided to run 4 IG52 motors. I will use 136rpm motors and 10″ tires for my cabin mower. I was also wanting a mower for home, just a simple flat surface version. I was thinking about 6″ wheel and shaft sets for that one but I don’t seem to see that combo on your website for the 52mm motors?

We don’t sell a direct drive shaft for an IG52 motor and a 6″ tire. We can make them for you if you’d like though if you send us a request through our contact form:

Just let us know how many. It will be the same dimensions as this one but with a 6 inch hub:

That’s great! Just crunching some numbers with the 6″ wheels. 447fpm with the 285rpm motors (a little fast?) and 213fpm with the 136rpm motors (a little slow?) what are your thoughts?

Hi I’m going to build a remote control lawnmower using the toro lawnmower. I’m going to use the IG52 motors which I will purchase from this site. I was wondering do you sell the custom wheel plates that allow the heavy duty IG52 motors to be mounted inside of the lawnmower chassis.

Corey, it really comes down to whether you value speed or power more. We use the 285s in ours (tires are ~8″) and it’s definitely not too fast. If you’ll be driving in tall grass/rough terrain the extra torque might be useful.

jsteed, we sell the motor mount tubes and motor plates for the IG52 motors. They allow you to mount the motor and a 5/8″ bearing. It will be up to you to find a way to mount them to the lawnmower chassis.

We can also make something custom if you need it to have different dimensions or had something else in mind. Please fill out our fabrication request form to get a quote.
